Painted Parfleche
Artist: Kelly Looking Horse - Lakota
This painted purse has been hand-made with parflehce. The parfleche exemplifies one of the greatest traditions of abstract imagery created by American Indians. It measures 9 W x 11.5 H inches with a small braided rope wrapped on each end.
Parfleche is an un-tanned animal hide, originally made from buffalo, soaked in lye and water to remove the hair and then dried on stretcher. From the Plains throughout the Northwest, Native American used parfleche to produce shields, drums and, most often, carrying cases. Such cases were called "parfleches".
