Quillwork was unique to Native American Tribes in North America because the porcupine was native to the North American continent. And prior to 1840, porcupine quillwork was the primary form of decoration for the majority of the tribes living in the Northern Plains and Great Lakes areas where the porcupine could be found.
Quillwork is a meticulous and labor intensive art! The quills are gathered, sorted by size and then dyed. The quills must then be flattened and attached individually using four basic techniques: wrapping, braiding, sewing or weaving.
With the arrival of the European glass beads, quillwork gradually disappeared because beads were so much easier to use. The traditional art of quillwork was revived in the 1960's and continues today.
These beautifully handcrafted quill earrings measure 1 1/2 inches long and 1 inch wide.
