Turtle Parfleche Earrings
Artist: Mike Marshall, Sicangu Lakota
These earrings have been handmade with parfleche. Mike has hand painted a turtle on these striking earrings. If you are looking to make a statement these are the earrings for you as they measure 4 inches from the top of the hook to the bottom of the earring...and they are 2 1/4 inches wide.
Parfleche is an untanned animal hide, originally made from buffalo, soaked in lye and water to remove the hair and then dried on stretcher. From the Plains throughout the Northwest, Native Americans used parfleche to produce shields, drums, and most often carrying cases. Such cases were called "parfleches."
