Dragonfly Elk Hide Box
Artist: Lorri Ann Two Bulls - Oglala Lakota
This small parfleche box has been hand-crafted with elk rawhide and leather. It has also been hand-painted with a unique design. It measures 2 x 2 inch.
The parfleche exemplifies one of the greatest traditions of abstract imagery created by American Indians.
Parfleche is an un-tanned animal hide, originally made from buffalo, soaked in lye and water to remove the hair and then dried on stretcher. From the Plains throughout the Northwest, Native American used parfleche to produce shields, drums and, most often, carrying cases. Such cases were called "parfleches".
