The Land Along The River: The Ongoing Saga of the Sioux Land Claim, 1851-2012
Author: Peter Capossela
The Land Along the River chronicles a series of decisions in Washington, D.C. about lands in the Missouri River basin, initially taken by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for a series of dam projects.
The land at the heart of the book, was initially taken after heavy flooding in the 1940s as part of what became known as the Pick Sloan Missouri Basin Program.
Over 200,000 acres of land belonging to the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe and Standing Rock Sioux Tribe was flooded as part of the plan, which forced the relocation of the Native American population.
Capossela focuses on a collaboration between then Sen. Tom Daschle and then-Governor Bill Janklow. The Standing Rock and Yankton Sioux Tribes had pushed for the land to be returned to the tribes, with Capossela serving as one representative for the tribes.
