Quill Earrings with Beads
Artist: Laura Comstock, Minniconjou Lakota

The earrings are hand-made using iridescent seed beads and porcupine quills. They measure 2.5 inches long with kidney style ear wires.

Beadwork is an art form expressed and practiced throughout Native American Tribes. Beads of various types have been used for beautification by man since the beginning of time. These have taken many forms, such as seeds, shells, claws, bones, and stones.

Pieces of quillwork dated over 200 years old have been found in the Plains area. The introduction of beads in the early 1800s supplemented and tended to replace quills. The quill of a porcupine is a round, hollow tube which has a barbed point at one end. Quills were used both for trade and for decorative purposes.
