This is a narrative story of Oscar Howe, a Native American (Dakota) master artist born in South Dakota. Although he grew up in poverty on a reservation, he was taught the rich traditions of his Dakota heritage.

This book tells about Oscar's life - the challenges he faced, and the many accomplishments he achieved. The images of his vivid artwork will help the reader "look and learn" to identify Oscar Howe's unique style. Oscar's use of bold colors, shapes, and movement in his paintings will inspire and delight viewer's of all ages.

The book features historic photographs, full-color reproductions of Oscar's art, and a narrative of Oscar's life. There are accompanying "History Lessons", thought-provoking questions for kids, Lakota language segments, a time line, and fun facts throughout the pages. The theme of the book is to persevere.
