Original Design: Karen Berry - Cherokee
Karen Berry, a Cherokee artist from Texas, was introduced to the Cherokee culture and art through her mother, Martha Berry, a renowned artist in Cherokee beadwork. Karen notes, "Early on, I fell in love with gourd art, a traditional Cherokee medium, through my exposure to woodworking and painting. I incorporate both pre-European contact and modern Cherokee designs into my work. I also do finger weaving in the traditional style of the 18th century Southeastern Woodland tribes." Along with other weavers, Karen has helped lead a revival of this tradition within the Cherokee Nation.
