Kevin Locke, Lakota
Open Circle is a dynamic collection of ancient American Indian flute songs enriched by a rhythmic, all-acoustic blend of native instruments from around the world (didjeridu from Australia, drums from Africa and Haiti, ocharina from Central America, berimbau from Brazil, plus assorted percussion) and sounds of nature from the Dakotas.
This innovative album opens with a bold presentation of the widely known but little understood song Amazing Grace, written by an 18th century English sea captain and slave trader. While commanding his ship, the wretched John Newton experienced a transformational moment which caused him to repent and return his human cargo to Africa. Enhanced by percussion, singers and sound design reflecting Newton's revelation, Kevin Locke's emotional interpretation of the song honors the African people brought to this continent, and offers a welcome to all who have arrived on the shores of North America.
The full color 16-page CD booklet contains Lakota/English translations.
